If you are looking for a Golden Retriever puppy, we encourage you to reach out to breeders who complete the genetic health testing for the breed (all breeding dogs be 24 months minimum and have hips and elbows x-rayed and evaluated by organizations such as Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, Penn Hip, BVA, or OVC (prior to 2012), as well as screening for hereditary eye (completed annually), and heart disease by veterinary specialists.
In addition, it is also recommended that breeding dogs have the available DNA health testing complete (prcd-PRA, GR-PRA 1 and 2, Degenerative Myelopathy, NCL and Ichthyosis). This testing is not the same as a regular exam by a veterinarian. These health clearances help to ensure that the males and females who are being bred will produce the healthiest offspring possible. There are no genetically perfect dogs, but a good breeder will have done their homework to use dogs who will improve the health and longevity of our breed.
We encourage you to visit the breeder list available at our national breed club – Golden Retriever Club of Canada - grcc.net/index.php/breeders-list/- and the Puppy List available on the Canadian Kennel Club’s website www.ckc.ca/Choosing-a-Dog/PuppyList/Default.aspx
We wish you the best of luck in your search
